Numanthia Termes Toro 2021 750ml
Description
Termes represents Numanthia’s more accessible offering, though in the context of Toro that still means serious wine. Sourced from old but not ancient vines, this 2021 showcases the estate’s ability to create structured, age-worthy wines that don’t require the patience (or investment) of their flagship Termanthia.
The wine pours a deep, vibrant purple that speaks to quality fruit and careful extraction. On the nose, Termes offers impressive intensity—ripe blackberries, plums, and black cherries dominate, accompanied by the floral notes of violets that mark quality Tinta de Toro. The oak program is evident but well-judged, adding notes of vanilla, dark chocolate, and sweet spices that complement rather than overwhelm. As the wine opens, more complex aromas emerge: licorice, dried herbs, and a distinct mineral character.
The palate delivers serious structure wrapped in approachable fruit. Full-bodied with substantial but polished tannins, Termes walks the line between power and elegance. Dark fruit flavors coat the mouth, supported by well-integrated oak and balanced by fresh acidity that keeps the wine dynamic. This is Toro with ambition but also restraint, showing that the region can produce more than just blockbusters. Mid-palate, notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and Mediterranean herbs add complexity.
Termes 2021 succeeds as both an introduction to Numanthia’s style and a serious wine in its own right. While lacking the extreme concentration of Numanthia or Termanthia, it offers exceptional quality at a more accessible price point. The finish is long and satisfying, with fruit and spice notes that linger impressively. This is cellar-worthy Toro that also drinks well now with appropriate food—grilled meats, hearty stews, or aged cheeses. Proof that Toro’s potential extends beyond the ultra-premium category.
